An Emory & Henry first-year student who lost only seven games in four matches during spring break tennis competition has been named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men’s tennis.
Matt Nelson (Galax High, Galax, Va.), who plays at the No. 2 singles spot and on the E&H No. 1 doubles team, was undefeated in both singles (4-0) and doubles (4-0) at Hilton Head, S.C. He helped his team to a 4-0 sweep during the week, with wins over Heidelberg (6-3), Penn State-Behrend (7-2), Northwestern College (8-1) and Juniata (9-0).
Nelson is 10-1 on the season at No. 2 singles and 11-1 at doubles. As a team, the Wasps are off to one of their best starts in recent history, with a 10-2 overall record.
Nelson’s ODAC honor represents the second time in two months that an E&H player has been named ODAC Player of the Week. In February, Nelson’s doubles partner, sophomore Chip Wintringham, who plays No. 1 singles, received the recognition.
