RU Women's Golf Finish Third At Highlander Invitational

rp primary austin-20120923-1DRAPER, Va. – Fueled by Top-10 performances from Alexandra Austin (Burke, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and Hayley Hammond (Mooresville, N.C. / Lake Norman), the Radford women's golf team finished third in the Highlander Invitational on Sunday evening carding a two-round ledger of 612 (307-305).

Gardner-Webb hoisted the team title with a 599 (303-296), while Winthrop's Meagan Wallace captured the individual race at the par 72, 6,179-yard Draper Valley Golf Club.

Hammond led the Highlanders in the morning round, firing a 4-over 76. After trimming one stroke off in the evening round, Hammond finished with a 151 to tie for sixth with three other golfers, including her teammate Austin.

The sophomore carded a 5-over 77 in the first round and made the biggest move of the RU squad by posting a team-best 2-over 74 in the evening. For Austin, it is her sixth Top-10 showing of her young career.

Paige Reese (South Hill, Va. / Park View) finished just one shot out of the Top-10 with a 153 (77-76). Freshman Katie Parrott (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) was impressive in her morning round, recording a season-best 5-over 77. The Brentwood, Tenn. native tied for 23rd after shooting 85 over the final 18 holes.

Rounding out the scoring was Kirsty Condon (Lincolnshire, England / Kesteven and Sleaford), who fired a 165 (85-80) to end in 29th place. Competing as an individual, Courtney Floyd (Riverbank, Calif. / Riverbank) shot 189 (100-89) to come in 45th.

The Runnin' Bulldogs led wire-to-wire, backing up their first-round 303 with an 8-over 296. Led by Wallace's tournament-best 145 (71-74), Winthrop finished second with a two-round total of 608 (307-301). Radford, which ended four shots back of second, Wofford and High Point rounded out the Top-5 squads in the team standings.

The Highlanders' third-place performance marks the second straight Top-5 showing of the season and becomes the 16th Top-5 finish under head coach Jeff Beeler's watch.

The Lady Pirate Intercollegiate is the next stop for Radford, which gets underway on Monday, Oct. 8. The 54-hole tournament will be hosted by East Carolina at Greenville Country Club.
