SWEET BRIAR - Eight different Roanoke College women's soccer players scored in a 9-0 victory over Sweet Briar College on Thursday afternoon. The Maroons now have a record of 8-5-2 and are 6-2-1 in the ODAC, while the Vixens are 0-10-1, and 0-8-1 in ODAC play.
The Maroons now have a 29-2-1 all-time record against Sweet Briar, and this marks the 13th consecutive shutout posted against the Vixens by Roanoke.
Carmen Graves got the ball rolling early for the Maroons by posting the first goal of the game. She scored off a cross from Rebekah Adams to take the 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Adams found the back of the net on her own, placing the ball in the upper right hand corner of the goal. At 22:37, Cindy Suttora fielded a pass from Stephanie Parenteau and scored to take a 3-0 lead. Parenteau jumped in on the action just three minutes later as she beat the keeper on the lower right side of the net for the fourth goal of the game. Kara Kapell scored the final goal of the half at 43:25 to end the period with a 5-0 lead.
It took the Maroons 21 minutes to get going again in the second half, but Kirstin Figel scored Roanoke's sixth goal off of a corner kick. Three minutes later Jessica King blasted one from 30 yards out to go up 7-0. Figel picked up her second goal of the game at 79:54, which proved to be the Maroons eight goal of the contest. The final goal of the game came from Candace Connolly who took advantage of a loose ball in the box to put the Maroons up 9-0.
Roanoke held Sweet Briar without a shot, while taking 27 shots on the afternoon. The Maroons also led the contest in corner kicks 10-0. Connolly and O'Brien led the team in shots with four each, followed by King with three. Four different Maroons (Sarah Dvorak, Kristyn Brogan, Carolyn Sarbacher, and Lauren Fischelis) split nearly equal time in goal during the game, none of which faced a shot.
Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, October 20th when they travel to Virginia Beach to take on #5 ranked Virginia Wesleyan. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM kickoff.
