RC Women Win Roanoke College Invitational, Men Come in Second

The Roanoke College Track and Field teams hosted the Roanoke College Invitational at C. Homer Bast Track. Both the women and men ended the sunny day with excellent performances. The women finished the meet in first place with 227.5 points while the men placed second with 170 points.

Senior Elizabeth Mumaw (Berryville, VA, Clarke County) started the day off for the Maroons in the 10,000m run, finishing in a time of 43:26.9 to bring in ten points for the team. The 4x100m relay of Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester), Clarke Lewis (The Woodlands, TX, The Woodlands), Jazamine Stallings (Harve De Grace, MD, Harve De Grace) and Robin Yerkes (Arnold, MD, Broadneck) scored another ten points for Roanoke, placing first with a National provisional qualifying time of 48.26. Osborne also had a National provisional qualifying jump in the long jump, winning with a leap of 5.77m.
 
The Maroons had several women with high scoring finishes.  Freshman Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) won the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.24, then went on to win the triple jump with a jump of 10.99m. Freshman Meagan Tolley (Roanoke, VA, Northside) won the 100m hurdles in 16.17 and placed third in the triple jump.  Haley Boone (Fairfax, VA, Westfield) finished second in the 100m hurdles behind Tolley then went on to place third in the 400m hurdles.
 
Women also having excellent performances included Stephanie Spickard (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt) who won the 1500m run in a time of 5:12 and teammate Emma Wilson (Tuftonboro, NH, Kingswood Regional)won the 800m run in a time of 2:25.55. Stallings placed fourth overall in the 100m dash with a time of 12.97 and  Karis Crosby (Richmond, VA, Mills Godwin) placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 26.74.
 
The women also had a great day in the field. Whitney Fitzwater (Middletown, DE, Middletown) scored the most points for the team, winning the hammer throw, placing fourth in javelin, sixth in discus and third in shot put. Fitzwater broke the facility record for C. Homer Bast track in the hammer throw with a 45.00m. Aimee Szumiesz (Concord, NH, Concord) and Alisha McCrowey (Buchannon, VA, James River) also had a great performances. Szumiesz placed second in the hammer and third in the javelin while McCrowey placed second in shot put, fourth in the hammer, and fifth in discus.
 
On the men’s side of the competition, Roanoke did quite well. Andy Nagel (Gloucester, VA, Gloucester) led the trend with a win in the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.38. Freshman Jed Curtis (Fisherville, VA, Wilson Memorial) finished right after Nagel in the hurdles, with a time of 15.87.  Curtis also placed fifth in the 400m hurdles later in the day and third in the high jump.
 
Wesley Underwood (Narrows, VA, Narrows) won the 100m in 11.47, then went on to win the long jump with a jump of 6.63m. Underwood also placed second in javelin and triple jump with distances of 50.13 and 12.84, respectively. Underwood was awarded the Male Athlete Award of the Roanoke College Invitational.
 
The men had several exceptional performances, like the women, throughout the day. Colton Linton (Williamsport, MD, Williamsport) won the 200m dash for Roanoke in 22.94, while teammate Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington) placed fourth in 23.54. Trevor Hunt (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) and Chase Board (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) placed in the 400m in fourth and sixth respectively.
 
The men also did well in the distance events during the day.  Michael Rawlings (Roanoke, VA, Northside)and Pat Fiske (Towson, MD, Gilman School) placed fourth and sixth in the 1500m. Rawlings went on to place fifth in the 800m. In the 5000m, Doug Fender (Marion, VA, Marion) and Josh Metz (Bear, DE, Charter School)placed fourth and fifth. 
 
In the field, Hunter Murphy (Ringois, NJ, Hunterdon Central) placed fourth in the hammer with a heave of 38.50m. Peter Foxen (Rocky Hill, CT, Rocky Hill) and Jonathan Taylor (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) placed in the javelin as well as Underwood. Foxen and Taylor finished fourth and sixth respectively in that event. Taylor went on to finish fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.
 
To wrap the day up for the men, the 4x400m of Nagel, Linton, Rawlings and Janse won in a time of 3:28.94.
 
The Roanoke College Track and Field team will next travel to the Bridgewater College Invitational in Bridgewater, VA, March 27.
