Roanoke Wins On Own Goal, 1-0

Roanoke-Maroons-LogoAn own goal proved to be all Roanoke needed in a 1-0 win over Wesley (DE) in the Osprey Invitational Friday evening.  The win propels the Maroons to 5-0 on the season.  The Wolves dropped to 1-2-1.

Roanoke, which is 3-0 against Wesley, held a slight advantage in shots, 11-7, while owning a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.  The Maroons are off to their best start since the 2000 season (10-0).  In addition, Scott Allison passed Washington and Lee’s Rolf Pinarian as the winningest active ODAC Coach in career wins with 276.  He is already the all-time ODAC wins coach entering this season.

In the 57th minute, Roanoke was attacking the ball within the 18’ as a Wesley defender got a foot on the ball.  Unfortunately, the ball sailed into the Roanoke net, giving the Maroons all they needed as they secured their fifth-straight shutout victory.

Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) led the team with three shots, followed by AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) and Peyton Lambert (Chesapeake, VA, Western Branch) with two shots, one on goal apiece.

Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville) collected two saves in his combined shutout effort.  Avery Makel (3-0) earned the victory, playing the entire second half.

Joshua Chello led Wesley with three shots, one on goal.   Nico Scarpato added two shots on the night.  Nick Talarico finished with four saves in goal.

Roanoke, ranked 10th in the NSCAA South Region Poll, return to action today, as they play against tournament-host Stockton at 6:30 p.m.
