GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team was selected to finish seventh this season as predicted by the Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball coaches and announced Friday afternoon by the league office. Defending ACC champion, Florida State was awarded the top preseason spot after receiving nine first place votes.
Cara Baarendse was voted on to the 18-member Preseason All-ACC team. The senior middle blocker picked up her second consecutive All-ACC First Team honors at the end of last season and was named to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention team. Clemson and Florida State led the league with three honorees each.
Tech concluded last season with an 18-13 overall record and an 11-9 mark in the ACC to finish sixth in 2011. The Hokies return four starters and their starting libero this season. Baarendse led the team with 327 kills while fellow senior Jennifer Wiker tallied 320.
The Hokies will travel to the Tiger Volleyball Invitational Aug. 24-25 to kick off the season. Tech will face Nicholls State and host team Missouri on the opening day before concluding competition that Saturday against Michigan.
