ATLANTA – The Virginia Tech volleyball team faltered on the road at Georgia Tech, falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 13-25, 19-25) on Friday night in ACC action at O’Keefe Gymnasium in Atlanta.
Jennifer Wiker led Virginia Tech (11-5, 4-2 ACC) with 21 kills with Samantha Gostling adding 11 kills. Jordan Fish put up 43 assists while Morgan O’Neill tallied 17 digs.
Georgia Tech (12-4, 4-2 ACC) was led by Bailey Hunter with 23 kills. Monique Mead added 16 and Annie Czarnecki posted 11 kills. Kaleigh Colson notched 51 assists and Nicki Meyer had 13 digs for the Yellow Jackets.
Virginia Tech got out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set. The Hokies maintained their lead and were up 17-11 before the Yellow Jackets responded with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 19. The two teams were tied at 23 but back-to-back kills by GT secured the points for the 25-23 win.
The two teams kept it close in the second set with 11 ties and were tied at 16. Virginia Tech went on a 3-0 run to break open the scoring and take a 19-16 advantage. The Hokies extended their lead to 21-17, but the Yellow Jackets looked to make a late run, cutting it down to 24-22. Virginia Tech secured the set with a kill from Wiker to win 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1.
Georgia Tech took control of the third set early and led by as much as 19-8. The Hokies would get no closer than nine at 22-13 as the Yellow Jackets won 25-13, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets again got out to the lead, but the Hokies kept it close, trailing by one at 10-9. Georgia Tech extended its lead to 14-10, but the Hokies again cut it down to one (15-14). Virginia Tech trailed by one at 20-19 and looked to make a run, but the Yellow Jackets closed out the set outscoring the Hokies 5-0 to secure the 25-19 win and the match.
Georgia Tech hit .450 (64-10-120) on the attack while the Hokies knocked down .263 (47-17-114).
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 6 in a 7:30 p.m. match at Clemson.
