The inability to score in the final two minutes of the game proved to be the difference, as 12th-seeded Miami upset fourth-seeded Virginia Tech, 70-65, in the quarterfinals of the ACC men’s basketball tournament Friday afternoon at Greensboro Coliseum.
With the Hokies (23-8) leading 65-64 with 2:02 left in the game, Virginia Tech would miss several opportunities in the final minutes to extend its lead. However, the Hokies couldn’t twinkle the twine, as Miami (20-12) would close out the game with a 6-0 run to claim the victory.
"I thought we played very hard," said Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg. "Again, it’s simplistic, we didn’t guard the ball the way we needed in the last four minutes and we didn’t make the shots."
Virginia Tech led 37-35 at the half at jumping out to a 24-14 advantage with 9:42 remaining in the first half., Tech would take its biggest lead of the second half, 48-43, on a Jeff Allen free throw with 14:26 left in the game. It would be back and forth from that point on, before the ‘Canes made their comeback in the final minutes.
The Hokies finished shooting 38 percent for the game (24-63), including a dismal 9-of-31 shots in the second half alone. The Canes shot 46 percent for the game (25-54).
Virginia Tech was out-rebounded 46-29.
Durand Scott led Miami with 17 points and DeQuan Jones added 14 points.
Jeff Allen led Virginia Tech with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. Dorenzo Hudson tossed in 16 points, Terrell Bell had 12 points and JT Thompson added 10 points.
Malcolm Delaney was held to seven points. He was 0-8 from three-point land and 3-of-15 from the floor.
Note: During the post-game press conference, a reporter asked coach Greenberg about the open coaching position at St. John’s. (The New York Post has reported that St. John’s was interested in Greenberg,)
Greenberg replied to the question by saying, "I'm coaching at Virginia Tech."
