With three returning starters off of last year's team that won the Seminole District and finished 21-5 overall, the Staunton River girl's basketball team is hoping to make some noise, as they prepare for their first season in the Blue Ridge District.
Returning starters include Jodie Salyer (5-9, PG, soph.), Amy Salyer (5-11, F, senior) and Laquaksha Robinson (5-10, F, senior). Other Golden Eagles members include Briana Holdren (5-2, G, fr.), Brittany Robinson (5-7, G/F, soph.), Sara Mayhew (5-2, G, senior), Addie Tuck (5-8, C, fr.), Jordan Merrill (5-10, G, senior) and Morgan Linkous (5-8, G/F, junior). Robinson, Amy Salyer, Merrill and Mayhew are all seniors and solid players and Jodi Salyer- sophomore point guard, will be the impact players for Staunton River this season, accordign to their coach. One of the biggest weaknesses for the team is not having many players this year and the lack of depth. working together as a team and palying good defense is a team strength. "This year our team will have lots pf heart," said head coach Kim Jones, who is starting her eighth season at Staunton River. "Someone must step up to help us in scoring." Satunton River opens its season Wednesday night, as they entertain Jefferson Forest. The JV game starts at 6 p.m, followed by the varsity contest.
