ACC Men's Tournament Underway

acc-logoValleySportsNow is at the ACC Men’s Tournament today. We will be providing some interesting tidbits and interesting news throughout the tournament. Check back throughout the day for our latest posts.

Sunday

4 p.m. - Mike Wood, who was the head referee on today's game, was working his final ACC Tournament. Wood will oversee the officials in the Sun Belt Conference next season. Also working today's game were Karl Hess and Ray Natili. Well fans, that's a wrap from Greensboro. It's time to hit the road and head back to Radford. Spring sports for the high schools start tomorrow.

3:50 p.m.- Ga. Tech's Derrick Favors had a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Duke's Kyle Singler tossed in 20 points. One big difference, was that the Yellow Jackets had 17 turnovers compared to 10 for the Blue Devils. Duke scored 14 points off those turnovers.

3:30 p.m. - What a great game. The Yellow Jackets gave it their best shot and Duke, once again, manages to pull out the victory, 65-61. Just when you thought the Blue Devils would put it away, Ga. Tech would be right there knocking on the door again. The celebrations have just begun here in Greensboro. we will have more shortly.

11:45 a.m. - It's a beautiful sunny day here in Greensboro this morning. The parking lots are filling up fast and the fans are starting to pile into the coliseum. Today's champiosnhip tilt between Duke and Ga. Tech should be a good battle. Which Duke team will show up today? Right now, the Blue Devils need a solid and dominating performance today to show the selection committee that they are worthy of a No. 1 seed. Does Ga. Tech have enough left in them to pull the upset?  Tip off is about an hour away. A lot of questions will be answered then.

Saturday

7 p.m. - Man.....another exciting ball game with Ga. Tech hanging on for a 57-54 victory over NC State. Both games today were decided by three points, with Duke beating Miami, 77-74, earlier in the day. Tomorrow's matchup should be a good one. Can the Yellow Jackets upset Duke? Will the real Duke team show up? I understand there are plenty of tickets for sale out on the streets.

Anyway, fans, that's  a wrap from today. Time to hit the town and enjoy a little bit of the Greensboro night life. I'll see you all on Sunday.

5:10 p.m. - Well.....Duke pulled that one out of somewhere. Miami gave it a good fight. Now that the Canes are gone, my water and popcorn will be safe on press row. Sebastian, the Miami mascot,  and I became friends, as he seemed to think that I was his personal source for popcorn and bottled water. I know it's hot under those outfits. Oh by the way, I wonder why the Hokie Bird was a "no show" on Friday?

2:40 p.m. - Could there be an upset in the making? Miami is leading Duke at the half, 35-32. The second half should be as exciting as the first.

1:15 p.m. - We're about 15 minutes away from the start of today's first semifinal game between Duke and Miami. Should be a good one. The place is buzzing today. Plenty of sunshine and warm temps and the fans are having fun outside at the FanFest. Even the scalpers are out in force today. Tickets going really cheap. Right now, you can get tickets for tomorrow's championship game for $40. Who would ever think you would find an ACC championship ticket that cheap. It's time to go watch some hoops. Catch you later sports fans.

9:20 a.m. - Good morning sports fans. It's semifinal day here in Greensboro. Miami meets Duke at 1:30 p.m. and NC State takes on Ga. Tech at 4 p.m. Will there be any upsets today? We will know later this afternoon. Check back often for more posts throughout the day.

Friday

11:55 p.m. The last two games were barn-burners, as Georgia Tech upset Maryland, 69-64, and N.C. State just stunned Florida State 58-52. Saturday's semifinals should be interesting. Well, fans, its been a long day here in Greensboro. I'll be bringing you more news on Saturday.

5:10 p.m. - After leading 37-35 at the half, the Hokies would falter down the stretch, as they fell to Miami, 70-65. Va. Tech shot 47 percent in the first half (15-32) and a miserable 29 percent in the second half (9-31). "Our shots just didn't fall," said VT head coach Seth Greenberg." Complete game details, including video from the Tech press conference, will be posted later. Will the Hokies go to the big dance, or, will they be relegated to the NIT? That answer will come Sunday.  Georgia Tech and Maryland is up next with a 7 p.m. start. Until then, stay dry.

2:10 p.m. - Well.... Duke finally showed up, a little late though. The Blue Devils would pull away late to claim the 57-46 win. Virginia Tech and Miami tip in about 20 minutes. This could be an exciting game.

1:05 p.m. - It's halftime and who would ever think the UVA/Duke game would be tied at the half (27-27). The Cavs are shooting 33 percent from the floor and Duke 31 percent in the first half. This one has the potential to go down to the wire. However, I think an entirely different Duke team will show up in the second half.

10:50 a.m.-  Good morning sports fans. I hope you are ready for another exciting day of ACC basketball. Will UVA upset Duke? Will the Hokies beat Miami? Will Maryland handle Ga. Tech and will Florida State send NC State home? All of those questions will be answered by the end of the day.

If you haven't done it yet, check out our video from yesterday's UVA/BC press conference.

I'll be checking back in later with some more news and tidbits. It's time to stake out the hospitality room. I heard there's some great food there.

Thursday

11:45 p.m. -
WOW!!!! Another exciting game that went down to the wire, as NC State just defeated Clemson, 59-57. The Wolfpack will face Florida State at 9 p.m. Friday night. Well, we're calling it a day here from Greensboro...We will be providing updates throughout the day on Friday.

9:10 p.m. - WOW!!!! What a game. Ga. Tech just beat North Carolina, 62-58. Now the Yellow Jackets get Maryland tomorrow night. The Tar Heels did not hit a single field goal in the final five minutes. This marked the third time that Ga. Tech has beaten UNC this season. Oh by the way, they're gonna cut the internet off at the tip of the NC State/Clemson game, which is about 30 minutes away, so they can work on it. It would be nice if they can get it to work without knocking you off every 5 minutes and then it takes you 10-plus minutes to get back on, if you're lucky. EVERYONE, in the media is raising heck....

6:30 p.m. - The UNC/Ga. Tech game tips in about 30 minutes. I wonder which Tar Heel team made the trip tonight. This could be a good game and again, this could be another stinker.

4:45 p.m. - I'm not sure what's worse, the 83-62 whipping that Wake Forest just took from Miami or the internet service here at the coliseum. Both are pretty bad. The Canes now face Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Friday. Should be a great game. Georgia Tech and North Carolina will tip at 7 p.m., followed by Clemson and NC State at 9 p.m.

2 p.m. - UVA just beat Boston College, 68-62. The Cavs will meet Duke tomorrow. Roanoke resident Roger Ayers was one of the refs on the game. Time to head to the press conference.

11:20 a.m. - Just had some great BBQ from a place across the street from the Greensboro Coliseum. Not bad for someone who is not a BBQ fan. Small world, as I saw Bull and his lovely wife, Sue, and friends from Riner also in there eating. I should have left my tab with them. Now, it's time to go to work. UVA/BC tips in about 40 minutes.

9:30 a.m. - Just arrived at the tournament and now getting settled in here in the media center. My buddy, Doug, from the Roanoke Times is already here and not sitting too far away. UVA, which is Doug's beat, plays Boston College at high noon. Ok, now it's time to find the food.
