The Christiansburg area will receive a big economic boost later this week when the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department hosts the 2010 Dixie Boys Baseball World Series Friday, July 30 through Wednesday, August 4 at the Harkrader Sports Complex just off Interstate 81 (Exit 114)  in Christiansburg, Va.

Twelve teams from 11 different states including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia will compete for the championship in this annual event. The host team is the Christiansburg All-Stars.

The action will get underway Friday afternoon with a series of fun competition events starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Harkrader Sports Complex. The contests include an infield relay, home run derby, fastest base runner, and an outfield relay. The Friday evening activities include Opening Ceremonies at 7:45 p.m., in which former major leaguer Mike Williams will speak and a fireworks show at 9 p.m. Both of these events will be held at the Christiansburg High School football field. The public is invited to attend both the afternoon and evening activities at no cost.

World Series baseball games will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31. The Virginia team (Halifax County) and the Christiansburg All-Stars team will take to the diamond at 7 p.m. against Georgia (Troup County) and Arkansas (Searcy), respectively. The cost of the games per day are $5 for those 13 and over, $3 for those 7 through 12 and free for those under 6.

Also on Saturday, former Baltimore Orioles star and 1973 American League Rookie of the Year Al Bumbry will be in attendance all day at the Harkrader Sports Complex to throw out the first pitches, greet fans and sign autographs.
