Mississippi plated single runs in the second, third and fourth inning before tallying two in the fifth. Blake Shows had a pair of hits including a double and run scored, while Jalon Keys added a two run double.
For the fifth time in the World Series, Mississippi squeezed home a run as Chandler Blakeney, who went 2-for-2 on the evening executed the play in the third.
Zach Walker pitched six and two-thirds innings allowing no earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts to pick up the victory. Garrett Goodwin got the final out by strikeout with two runners on to earn the save.
Virginia got five hits from five different players scoring on a single by Seth Elliot. Hunter Watts took the loss on the mound for Virginia.
Mississippi will now await the result of the 8:00 game between Brunswick County, North Carolina and Monroe, Louisiana. If North Carolina wins, Mississippi must defeat them twice to win the tournament. If Louisiana wins, the three teams will go into a draw to determine the match-up and championship game bye.
Quotes
Mississippi Coach Kenneth Seymour “Zach Walker came through for us in a big way. We need him to step up big because we had to use a lot of pitching in the two games yesterday. We made some mistakes but we overcame that with timely hits. Our bats came alive a little more today and we needed that bad.”
Virginia Coach Tom Harris “We couldn’t get the base hits we needed or make the plays we have been making, we just couldn’t get it done. We aren’t satisfied because we thought we could play better but fourth is pretty good out of 12 teams – you can’t win all the time but you need to bring it to the table and we just didn’t do it tonight.”
