Day five of the 2010 Dixie Ozone Distinct 3 Tournament at Motor Mile Park Wednesday evening, saw Blacksburg defeat Christiansburg to advance to tonight's championship game against Montgomery County.
Game #9: Blacksburg 7, Christiansburg 2
Round three of the Blacksburg-Christiansburg rivalry saw Blacksburg prevail 7-2. The first four innings of this game saw a pitchers duel between Ashton King of Christiansburg and Ethan Goforth of Blacksburg. Both pitchers were on their game only giving up one run each through four. Blacksburg's run came in the second inning when Jack Madigan would single and come around to score thanks to an RBI double from Grayson Shelton. Christiansburg lone run would come from a solo home run shot off the bat of Charlie Jackson in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Blacksburg would get their bats hot and break the game open. Andrew Robertson would lead off with a single, Shelton would follow with a single of his own. Hal Hughes would reach on a walk loading the bases. Jacob Nottingham would deliver a huge 3RBI double to clear the bases. Later in the fifth, Bryce NIcolau would double and score thanks to a RBI double from Jake Verniel, after the fifth Blacksburg was ahead 5-1.
Blacksburg would add to their lead in the top of he sixth as Shelton and Robertson would again get on base. On cue, Nottingham would deliver with another double score two, giving him 5 RBIs for the game, increasing the Blacksburg lead to 7-1. Christiansburg would try to mount another last inning rally as they had done much of the tournament. Levi Bower would hit a single to keep hope alive, Logan Forster would get an RBI double to score him. However that would be it as Goforth, who pitched an complete game, would get out of the inning and preserve a Blacksburg victory. For the game Goforh would give up 9 hits, but only allow 2 runs while striking out 4 to earn the win. Christiansburg was eliminated with the loss, but once again played a strong tournament. Christiansburg is always a tough out, never giving up on a game and constantly coming after you.
Blacksburg advances to Thursday night's championship game and will face Montgomery County. Both teams enter with 3-1 record and have played an outstanding tournament. This should be a exciting final to see who will represent the New River Valley in the Virginia State tournament in Madison Heights, VA. Game time is at 6:00PM at Motor Mile Park and will be admission free, courtesy of Montgomery County Parks & Recreation. Come out early and cheer the teams on!
