The Blacksburg All-Stars won the 2010 Dixie Ozone District 3 Tournament Championship on Thursday night defeating Montgomery County 13-1. Blacksburg will now get ready for the Virginia State tournament in Madison Heights, VA.
Championship Game: Blacksburg 13, Montgomery County 1
Montgomery County would come out fired up for this one retiring Blacksburg 1-2-3 in the top of the first, then lead off with a double from Mitchell Jennings in the bottom of the first. Montgomery couldn’t get the run across thanks to excellent defense from Blacksburg. Blacksburg would get on the board first in the top of the second thanks to Bryce Nicolau who would walk and run the bases well to score without a hit. Blacksburg would add a second run in the third thanks to a Grayson Shelton hit and an RBI off the bat of Parker Walters. After the third is was 2-0 Blacksburg.
In the fourth Blacksburg would start putting this game away. Ethan Goforth would lead off with a single, followed by a walk to Jake Verniel. Adam Linkous would deliver the big blow with an RBI triple to clear the bases. Linkous and Andrew Roberson, who reached on a walk, would both later score giving Blacksburg 4 runs for the inning. Montgomery would get their lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Trenton Harding would double and come around to score from an RBI single from Josh Howard.
In the fifth Blacksburg would add on four more runs. Nicolau would start off with a walk, followed by a Jack Madigan double. Verniel would get an RBI groundout scoring Nicolau and Linkous would clear the bases again with an RBI double. Linkous and Roberson, who reached on a single, would both come around to score thanks to RBI single from Grayson Shelton. Blacksburg would add three more in the top of the sixth to increase their lead to 13-1.
Strong pitching throughout the game for Blacksburg was the difference as Hal Hughes started the game and went four innings giving up seven hits but only allowing one run to score while striking out three. Nicolau would pitch the final two innings giving up just one hit to finish the game.![]()
Montgomery County finished the tournament going 3-2 and earning runner-up honors. Pulaski County East won the sportsmanship trophy. Blacksburg finishes 4-1 and earns the championship. Next up for Blacksburg is a trip to the state tournament in Madison Heights, VA where they will represent District 3.
