War Sox Sweeps Cardinals In NRVSMBL

07 22 12 055The War Sox continued to hold down the top spot in the New River Valley Senior Mens Baseball League by sweeping the Cardinals 6-5 and 12-1 Sunday afternoon in Radford.

In the opening game, the War Sox held off a seventh inning Cardinal rally to claim an exciting 6-5 win.

The War Sox took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mike Taney led off with a single and later scored a on a fielder's choice by Jimmy May.

The Cardinals struck in the top of the fourth when Jonathan Cox led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Ted Dailey to tie the game at 1-1. The War Sox answered in its half of the inning when Alex Anduiza led off with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Skip Thompson to regain the lead, 2-1.

The Cards tied the game again in the top of the fifth when Josh Baker reached on a one-out fielder's choice and scored on Cox's RBI double to make it 2-all.

The War Sox would regain the advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Thompson led off with a walk. Sam Wood then reached on an error and James Akers walked to load the bases. Taney then smacked a two-run single to score Thompson and Wood. Akers would score on an error. An RBI sacrifice fly to center by Dalton Altizer would score Tyler Hoy, who had singled earlier, to make it 6-2.

Denzill Carter led off the Cardinals seventh by being hit by a pitch, Josh Cox followed with a single and Josh Barker was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Mike Dailey then laced an RBI single to score Carter. Ted Dailey then had a two-out, two RBI single to plate Cox and Barker to make it 6-5. The next batter was struck out, as the War Sox held on for the victory.

Mike Dailey, Jonathan Cox, Jordan Rea, Ted Dailey and Josh Cox led the Cardinals with a hit apiece.

Mike Taney, Tyler Hoy and Skip Thompson led the War Sox with two hits each.

Dalton Altizer picked up the win on the mound. He gave up five runs on five hits, walked three and struck out 11 batters in seven innings.

In the second game of the afternoon, the War Sox scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth inning to turn a close game into a lopsided 12-1 victory.

The War Sox took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Thompson led off by reaching on an error and later scoring on another error.

In the top of the third, an RBI single by Jimmy May and a wild pitch allowed the Sox pull out to a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals would answer in its half of the inning when Cox nailed a one-out single and later scored on an RBI single by Brandon Bartholomew to make it 3-1.

The War Sox started pulling away in the top of the fourth. A two-run single by Hoy, along with an RBI walk by Thompson and Sam Wood help allow the Sox cross the plate five times and take an 8-1 advantage.

An RBI single by Anduiza, along with a couple of errors and a pass ball allowed the Sox score four times in the top of the sixth to take the 12-1 victory.

Tyler Hoy, Jimmy May and Dalton Altizer led the War Sox with two hits apiece.

Mike Taney picked up the win for the Sox. He gave up one run on three hits, walked two and struck out four in six innings.

Jonathan Cox, Burton Inman and Brandon Bartholomew led the Cardinals with a hit each.

Ted Dailey was charged with the loss for the Cards. He gave up seven runs on four hits, walking four and striking out seven in 3 2/3 innings. Josh Cox and Jonathan Cox also saw duty on the mound.
