Lord Botetourt started off the season by claiming a 27 stroke win over second-place finisher Northside in the season opening Blue Ridge District Mini-Tournament Tuesday at the Ashley Plantation.

Wiliam Byrd walked away with the top honors on the All-Blue Ridge District Baseball Team, as Kevin Bowles was named the Player of the Year and Chris Carr and David Mitchell were named the Coach of the Year.

Alleghany's Tyler Farrar and Andrew Moore of Lord Botetourt took the top honors on the All-Blue Ridge District Boys Soccer Team, as they were named Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.

Jodi Salyer of Staunton River and Jamie Bednarek of Lord Botetourt took the top honors on the All-Blue Ridge District Girls Soccer Team, as they were named Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.

Jessica Mahoney of William Byrd was named Player of the Year, while Northside's Lauren Boitnott and Lynn Richmond were selected as the Pitcher and Coach of the Year, respectively, on the All-Blue Ridge District Softball Team.

William Byrd hosted the Heritage Pioneers of the Seminole District Monday in the quarterfinal of the Region III boys tennis tournament. In 2009, the Terriers lost a tough match to Spotswood in the region quarterfinals, and the sting of that early exit served as a prime motivator for 2010. When it was all said and done Monday, the Terriers advanced with a 5-2 decision.

Several of our local boys and girls tennis teams will start regional play today, as Region III and IV start their tournaments.

The Blue Ridge District will start its district tournament this afternoon, with games scheduled to be played in baseball, softball and boys and girls soccer.

Erin Wheeler helped lead Northside to the girls title, while Wesley Gates led Staunton River to the boys crown of the Blue Ridge District outdoor track championships Saturday at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville.
