Updated: Witt, Former Staunton River Football Coach, Arrested

Richard Witt, the former head football coach at Staunton River High School, was arrested Wednesday afternoon after being indicted on an indecent liberties charge by a Bedford County Grand Jury.

According to Major Ricky Gardner of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, Witt was arrested at his residence on one charge of having indecent liberties with a minor. The alleged incident did not occur on school grounds.

Bedford County Schools Public Information Coordinator Ryan Edwards said Monday that Witt was no longer working as a teacher or coach at Staunton River. "Mr. Witt is no longer employed by Bedford County Schools," stated Edwards on Monday.

Officials said that Witt's last day of employment was Dec. 18, 2009. His dismissal did not come to light until this past Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, as schools were closed for two weeks due to the Christmas break.

Witt, who took over the Golden Eagles program in 2008, led Staunton River to a 5-6 record this past season, as well as the team making its first playoff appearance since 1996. Prior to coming to Staunton River, he was an assistant football coach at William Byrd High School.

Updated: Thursday 2:45 p.m.: According to a search warrant, Witt  is suspected of having sexual contact with one student and an inappropriate relationship with another.

In the warrant, investigators said they were first tipped off about questionable text messages sent to a student. Then another student came forward who said she had sexual contact with Witt on several occasions.

Witt's office and classroom at Staunton River High School, along with his residence were searched by police.

As of Thursday morning, Witt was still being held in jail.
