Despite falling 7-1 to Hidden Valley in a non-district boys tennis match Wednesday afternoon in Vinton, William Byrd continues to show improvement on the courts.
"A year ago, the Titans scored an overwhelming 9-0 victory in which Byrd only won 11 games across all nine matches. Wednesday night, the Terriers were much more competitive," according to William Byrd head coach Jason Perdue.
Brennan Escobar lost a tough and exciting match to Nick Barker 6-1; 3-6; (6-10) tiebreaker. In the loss, Brennan played his best tennis of the young season. Bryce Martin and Jim Fisher pushed the Titan #2 doubles team to the brink before losing 9-7. Down 3-7, Bryce and Jim won 4 straight games to square the match at 7. Unfortunately, they came up just short in the end. The highlight of the night came at #5 singles where Trevor Perdue dropped the first set 1-6 before surging from behind to take the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-4. Perdue employed a mix of solid ground strokes and pinpoint volleys to record his third singles win in a row. He has registered at least one point in every match this year.
William Byrd is 1-4 on the year heading into two straight matches with Glenvar.
