After splitting the singles matches, William Byrd would win all three of the doubles matches, to claim a 6-3 non-district boys tennis win over Glenvar Monday afternoon in Salem.
The match, however, was much closer than the final score indicates. Early on, Terriers' Brennan Escobar beat Tim Howard in #1 singles, and Trevor Perdue beat Mike Roache in #4 singles to put Byrd ahead 2-0. Glenvar surged ahead 3-2 with wins in #2, #3, and #6 singles. Down 3-2, Byrd faced a tiebreaker in the #5 singles match; the Terriers were down 6-3 in #1 doubles; and were down 7-4 in #2 doubles. Glenvar looked poised to win the match.
The Terriers had other ideas. Bryce Martin won the tiebreaker in #5 singles to square the match at 3-3; Brennan Escobar and Trevor Perdue mounted a comeback and took #1 doubles 9-7; and Joseph Davis and Jim Fisher rebounded from four down, winning #2 doubles in a tiebreaker. Bryce Martin and Will Trent won #3 doubles to set the final margin at 6-3, Terriers
"We persevered tonight, winning several matches without playing our best tennis," said William Byrd head coach Jason Perdue. "Joseph Davis and Jim Fisher both showed great resolve in their #2 doubles match. We are starting to believe in ourselves and each other, and it's no accident that our toughness level is rising with each match."
A stern test awaits Wednesday evening at the Byrd courts, as Salem visits at 4:30 p.m.
