Salem made the trip to Vinton Wednesday afternoon and returned home with a 6-3 non-district boys tennis win over William Byrd.
Salem jumped to an early 2-0 lead behind singles wins for Patrick O'Keefe and Will Drougas, but the momentum of the match swung quickly in favor of the Terriers. Jim Fisher, playing his best tennis of the season, and Trevor Perdue, riding a recent hot streak, took the first sets in #3 and #4 singles. Bryce Martin and Will Trent did the same at #'s 5 and 6. As good teams often do, Evan Bond and Maxell Collignon of Salem rallied and won hard fought victories in #'s 3 and 4 singles, both in third-set tiebreakers.
Martin and Trent held strong to give Byrd a glimmer of hope going into doubles. Up 4-2, Salem won at #1 and #2 doubles to clinch the victory. Bryce Martin and Blaine Mills won #3 doubles 8-5 to put Salem's final margin at 6-3.
