Terriers Start BRD Girls Tennis Play Unbeaten

William-Byrd-Terriers-LogoWilliam Byrd picked up a pair of Blue Ridge District girls tennis wins last week, and are looking to stay perfect in league play, as they host Staunton River this afternoon in Vinton.

Wm. Byrd 6, Lord Botetourt 3

"Turning around with a back to back match is always hard on a team so I was hopeful the girls would show up rested and ready to play," said William Byrd head coach Amanda Stump. "GraceAnna had a quick two sets and really play good tennis at #3."

Coach Stump continued, "Probably one of the matches I was very excited to see go our way was our #4 Allena Willard. She was down 3-0 in the first set and came back to win 6-3, 6-4. She really pushed through and listened to a few cues we discussed and applied that to the match which shows she is growing as a player."

"Also our exhibition match with Julie Ensor and Alex Harris went well as they played doubles. They are using the practice time to strengthen their skills in their first year of playing," added the coach.

Singles wins coming from:
3 GraceAnna Chaney
4 Allena Willard
5 Holly Thomas
6 Brittany Lane

Doubles:
#2 Patterson/G. Chaney
#3 Lane/Tiffany Hodges

Wm. Bryd 5, Northside 4

"Our match against Northside was tit for tat in some aspects", said William Byrd head coach Amanda Stump. "We came out ahead in singles clenching four of the six and really needed the win obviously from Lane and Hodges. They played into the night so it was difficult for them to see by about the 6th game of the match but they pulled it through!"

The coach went on to say, "It's always nice to start out districts with some momentum but I told the girls that LB would be a tough day and we needed to be ready to head over with our game faces on."
