Adversity imposes it's will without regard for your state of readiness, and adversity invaded the William Byrd courts Wednesday evening in the form of a very good Glenvar Highlanders team looking for redemption from an early season 6-3 Terrier victory. Perhaps Byrd, fresh off four straight victories over district foes, were looking ahead to the second half of Blue Ridge District play, which begins Friday. More likely, Glenvar was just good.
The teams emerged from the six singles matches tied 3-3, as four of the six singles went to tiebreakers, with each team claiming two of the four tiebreakers. Adversity introduced herself to the Terriers when Tim Howard and Nick Trinchere (Glenvar) defeated Brennan Escobar and Trevor Perdue (Byrd) at one doubles, putting the Highlanders on top 4-3 with only two and three doubles remaining. The Terriers needed wins in the remaining two matches to claim victory.
Joseph Davis and Jim Fisher (Byrd) responded emphatically with an 8-0 win at two doubles. Bryce Martin and Will Trent (Byrd) gained late control of a tense and emotional three doubles match and prevailed 8-5, sending the Terriers to a gutty 5-4 victory, their fifth in a row. Byrd is 7-5 overall and 4-0 in the district.
As the Terriers left the court, tonight's tennis lesson was complete. Respect the Glenvar Highlanders. Confront adversity as a team. Believe, always believe!
