The Cavs needed the win to pull to within one match of the Terriers. A Byrd win would put them one match away from a second consecutive Blue Ridge District championship. But in the end, the Terriers prevailed, 7-2.
"Maturity. Experience. Patience. Players possessing these attributes often prevail, and tonight was no exception, said William Byrd head coach Jason Perdue.
Byrd seniors Brennan Escobar and Joseph Davis patiently and steadily overwhelmed their opponents to help Byrd jump ahead 2-0 in singles. Lord Botetourt clawed back into the match with wins at three and four singles, but sophomore Bryce Martin won at five singles to keep his district record unblemished and regain the momentum for the Terriers. Byrd senior Will Trent closed out singles play with a convincing win at number six.
Maturity, experience, and patience were also key in the doubles competition. After losing a hard-fought three-set match at four singles, senior Trevor Perdue gathered himself and teamed with Brennan Escobar to dominate one doubles. Escobar and Perdue constantly pressed the issue and ended many points with well-struck volleys and overheads. Like Perdue, junior Jim Fisher lost at singles, but he, too, put the loss behind him. At two doubles, Byrd prevailed as Fisher angled sharp backhand volleys and partner Joseph Davis cleaned up the weak returns with smothering net play. Bryce Martin and Will Trent closed out the night with a victory at three doubles, sending the Terriers to a 7-2 victory, their seventh in a row. Byrd stands 9-5 overall and 6-0 in the Blue Ridge District.
"It's late in a long season, and motivation to practice is often elusive. Escobar, Davis, and Perdue - three seasoned seniors - know what's at stake. Actions speak louder than words, and all these three do is keep winning," added coach Perdue.
