William Byrd continued to dominate in the Blue Ridge District boys tennis tournament Thursday afternoon at Alleghany, as they made it an all Terriers' affair in today's singles championship match. Byrd also placed two teams in the doubles semifinals, which will also be contested this afternoon.
Byrd's #1 singles, Brennan Escobar, advanced with a 6-0; 6-0 quarterfinal win over Scott Wolfe from Alleghany and a 6-2; 6-0 semifinal win over Evan Verplancken from Lord Botetourt. Joseph Davis, the Terrier #2 singles, also advanced with a 6-0; 6-0 quarterfinal win over Seth Thompson from Alleghany and a 6-2; 6-0 semifinal win over Wesley Tronolone from Staunton River. Escobar and Davis meet today in an all William Byrd singles final.
The doubles quarterfinals were also contested Thursday afternoon. Byrd's #1 doubles, Brennan Escobar and Trevor Perdue, advanced with a 6-1; 6-0 victory over Josh Basham and Matt Burnette from Staunton River. Byrd's #2 doubles team of Joseph Davis and Jim Fisher advanced by defeating Staunton River's Stefan Labrie and Wesley Tronolone 6-3; 7-5.
In the semifinals, Escobar and Perdue play Ethan Smith and Bryan Bess from Alleghany, and Davis and Fisher play Seth Thompson and Scott Wolfe, also from Alleghany.
Brennan Escobar and Joseph Davis were voted onto the Blue Ridge District All-District Team, and Escobar was selected as the Blue Ridge District Player-of-the-Year.
