After losing several key players from last year's team, William Byrd is looking to rebuild its volleyball program this season.
The Lady Terriers finished second in both the regular season and the Blue Ridge District last season. They then defeated Rustburg in the first round of regional play, before falling to Fort Defiance in the second round.
Returning to the program this season are seniors Sierra Spain (S), Kayla Mabe (DS), Ashley Minton (DS/OH), Madison Gensurowsky (OH) and junior Macie Hoback (MH/OH).
"Offensively we will look for Hoback, Minton and Gensurowsky to help lead the team as our returning hitters and defensively, Mabe," said coach Amanda Stump, who is starting her third season. "Spain returns as a second-year starter for the Terriers and brings a good intensity to the court."
Newcomers to the varsity program are sophomores Morgan Jackson (MH/S), Haley Maddox (DS), Mandi Hough (DS) and Megan Molnar (RH).
"The new additions of Maddox, Jackson, Molnar and Hough will help to build the program in many respects," added Stump.
William Byrd opens its 2010 season on Wednesday, Aug. 27, when they host Salem. The JV game starts at 7 p.m., followed by the varsity contest.
