Clintwood Upsets George Wythe

George Wythe saw its perfect season come to an end Saturday afternoon, as Clintwood pulled away in the second half to claim a 23-13 victory in the Group A, Division 1 West Section playoffs in Wytheville.

Clintwood (11-2) now travels to Sussex Central (12-1), an 88-8 winner over Covington, next Saturday in the Group A, Division 1 state semifinals.

The Maroons (12-1) took a 7-0 lead with 4:37 left in the first quarter, when Isaac Young rambled 36-yards and Hawks made the PAT.

The Greenwave answered in the second quarter when Gaven Meade scrambled 8 yards to the house. The PAT was no good, thus making it 7-6 with 6:30 showing.

In the third quarter, a 37-yard field goal by Meade and a 2-yard run by Meade upped Clintwood’s advantage to 16-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

George Wythe cut its deficit to three, 16-13, on a 1-yard plunge by Hunter Tolley. The Greenwave came back with a 10-yard run by Nate Mullins to make the final 23-13.

Clintwood tallied 291 yards of total offense. Gaven Meade led the way with 173 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns.

George Wythe posted 207 yards of offense. Alex Willis completed 4-of-10 passes for 90 yards and Isaac Young added 60 yards on six carries.

The Maroons were their own worst enemy, as they lost three fumbles and were intercepted three times.
