Sam Magyar recorded a double-double in helping lead the Bears to a 72-46 victory over the Indians in the opening round of the Region C, Division 1 girls basketball tournament Tuesday night in Bland.
Bland County (20-2) now meets Galax at 6 p.m. Thursday night in the semifinals at George Wythe High School.
The Bears would roar out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and increase their advantage to 34-19 at the half. The Indians (4-18) would fight their way back into this one in the third quarter, as they outscored their hosts, 15-12, to cut their deficit to 46-34 going into the fourth quarter. Any hopes of a Rural Retreat upset was put to rest early in the fourth quarter, as Bland outscored their guests, 26-12, to run away with the lopsided 72-46 victory.
Sam Magyar led Bland County with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Laurel Hankins tossed in 21 points and Kirby Mustard contributed 17 points.
