Galax used a strong second quarter in defeating Eastern Montgomery 82-69 in the championship game of the Region C, Division 1 boys’ tournament played Friday night at Fort Chiswell High School.
The Mustangs (21-4) held a 22-20 lead after the initial eight minutes. From that point on, it was all Galax (25-2). The Maroon Tide outscored the Mustangs 25-10 in the second quarter to take a convincing 45-32 lead at the half.
Galax continued to hold the upper-hand in the third quarter, as they increased their advantage to 58-50 heading into the final quarter of action.
The Maroon Tide started to pull away in the fourth, as they outscored the Mustangs 24-19 to claim the regional crown by a 82-69 margin.
For the game, East Mont was 4-of-8 at the foul line, while Galax was 21-of-31 at the stripe. The Mustangs were whistled for 24 fouls compared to just 10 for the Maroon Tide
Both teams will head into next week’s Group A state quarterfinals.
Julian Stewart led East Mont with 22 points.
Scott Alouf paced Galax with a game-high 33 points. Kyle Adams had 15 points, while Justin Hash and Cameron Frazier finished with 14 points each.
