Patrick County went on an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, to turn a one-point deficit, into a 60-53 win over Northside in the quarterfinals of the state Group AA girls championship tournament played at Salem Civic Center Friday night.
With the Vikings leading 44-43 with 5:10 left in the game, the Cougars would go on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead for good, as they pulled away for the 60-53 victory.
Northside would jump out to a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter before Patrick County would come back to tie the game at 8-all with 3:20 left in the first quarter. When the period ended the Vikings led 17-14.
In the second quarter, the Cougars, led by Kylene Culler, Hannah Helbert and Deleigh Barber, would go on a 12-0 run to take a 26-17 advantage. The Vikings would stop the run with 1:00 to go on two straight 3-pointers by Morgan Allen. By the time the half rolled around, Patrick County led 30-25.
Northside would go on 9-0 spurt to take a 34-32 lead with 3:00 to go in the third quarter. It was then back and forth, as the quarter ended with both teams tied at 40-all.
The Vikings would hold the advantage early on in the fourth quarter, before the Cougars would make one final run to pull out the 60-53 victory.
Patrick County shot 50 percent from the floor (20-40), while Northside was 18-for-56 for 32 percent.
Candice Smith led Northside with 18 points and Morgan Allen added 17 points.
Kylene Culler led Patrick County with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds.
