Bath County Falls To Sussex Central In State Semis

RICHMOND – In a low scoring contest that saw both Bath County and Sussex Central shoot under 30% from the field, the Tigers outlasted the Chargers 37-29 in the girls Group A, Division 1 state semifinal at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University Thursday afternoon.

Sussex (18-3) will now face J.I. Burton in the championship game this afternoon for the state championship crown.

The Tigers jumped out to a six point lead in the first quarter as both teams took their time on offense working for the good shot, except those shots didn’t find the bottom of the basket.

Bath (20-8), making their first ever trip to the semifinals, shot 1-of-11 from the three-point arch, and 10-of-54 overall.

Sussex made 12-of-43 shots from the field building a 19-15 lead at the break. Bath rallied to cut the lead to two in the fourth quarter, but the Hot Springs school never led and Sussex nailed their free throws down the stretch to advance.

The Tigers were led by Tatayana Calhoun with 16 points and 16 rebounds, as Jasmine Deloatch chipped in nine and 12 boards.

Bath got eight points from Kayla Baugh, while Jailyn Ford pulled down nine rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
