Byard Stevens hurled a one-hitter to help lead James River to a 5-0 win against Parry McCluer in the championship game of the Pioneer District baseball tournament Friday afternoon at Craig County High School.
The Knights scored once in the first and fifth inning and then added three more runs in the sixth.
Stevens gave up no runs on one hit, walking three and striking out seven in going the distance.
Dylan Buchanan had the lone hit for the Fighting Blues (10-10-2).
Zach Stinnett took the loss for Parry McCluer. He walked five and struck out five.
"We had opportunities to get some things going, but we just didn't get the job done. You can't leave men in scoring position, and you certainly can't miss signs on the bases and at the plate at this point in the season and expect it to not come back and bite you," said Parry McCluer head coach Jason Coleman. "Stevens pitched a very disciplined ballgame for James River. He kept his fastball away from our hitters, showed some things up when he was ahead, and it was up to us to make some adjustments, and we didn't. He got ahead of our hitters, and continued to stretch the zone each inning."
