The Maroon Tide needed overtime in this one, as they claimed a tough 43-39 win over the Fighting Blues, in the opening round of the Region C, Division 1 girls basketball tournament Tuesday night in Buena Vista.
Galax (11-12) now faces Bland County in the semifinals Thursday night at George Wythe High School. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Fighting Blues (12-8) would take a 9-6 lead after the opening eight minutes and increased their advantage to 17-13 at the half. The Maroon Tide would outscore Parry McCluer 19-12 over the third and fourth quarters to tie the game at 36-36, thus sending this one into OT. In the overtime period, Galax would outscore the Blues, 7-3, to claim the hard-fought 43-39 road win.
The Fighting Blues leading scorer, Kelsey Cole, was lost in the second quarter with a knee injury.
Bailey Shumate led Galax with a game-high 16 points and Allison White finished with 12 points.
Hailey Camden led Parry McCluer with 11 points.
