Blacksburg's Adrian Newcomb was named the Player of the Year on the recently released 2012 Group AA All-State Girls Soccer Team. Several other players were also selected to the team.
First Team honorees include Newcomb (Blacksburg, senior, forward), Kim Miaglianese (Salem, junior, defender), Kat Everett (Blacksburg, senior, forward) and Carrie West (Salem, sophomore, goalie).
Newcomb became e the first Blacksburg girls soccer player to earn State Player of the Year honors. During her career she has helped lead the Bruins to three-straight state final four appearances including one state final. This season she tallied 27 goals making her the record holder for career goals at Blacksburg. She has also scored numerous game winning goals including a big one this season against Group AAA Runner-Up Broad Run. This season she had nine goals in tournament play including the game winner in the River Ridge District final and Region IV final. She scores big goals in big time games for us. Newcomb is planning to play at Mary Washington University in the Spring. She will also play in the VHSCA All-Star Game this month.
"Adrian is very much deserving of this award and she can back it up with her stats over her career and especially her senior season. I’m very excited for Adrian as individual player and even more excited for her team," said Blacksburg head coach Travis Eschenmann. "Adrian would be the first to share this accolade with her teammates and competed not for individual awards, but to help the team achieve success. She is a great player supported by a great team and they can all celebrate this honor."
Second Team members included Kim Shaver (Blacksburg, junior, midfield), Jade Lewis (Lord Botetourt, senior, defender) and Emma Wade (Northside, junior, forward).
Honorable Mention selections include Emily Rawlings (Northside, junior, midfield) and Deidra Stultz (Northside, senior, goalie).
Erin Barrett of Woodgrove was named the Coach of the Year.
