Blacksburg High School’s spirit wear store, The Bear Necessities, was recently awarded Gold Level Re-Certification, the highest level of achievement for School-Based Enterprises (SBEs) with National DECA.
The SBE Program was developed by National DECA to provide recognition for outstanding achievement in entrepreneurship and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence. The program provides SBEs with standards for model school store operations and recognition for school-based enterprises at three levels--bronze, silver and gold. The number and type of activities a SBE completes in each of the twelve sections will determine the level of certification awarded.
BHS Juniors Erica Wharton and Lilly Goldsmith managed the difficult task of completing a 40 page manual detailing store operations for The Bear Necessities for DECA’s State Leadership Conference March 11 – March 14, 2010 in Norfolk, Virginia. They will be recognized on stage at the conference for their achievement. All SBEs achieving Gold Level Re-Certification are also eligible to attend the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Bear Necessities is operated by Blacksburg High School’s Advanced Sports Marketing classes under the supervision of DECA Advisor Kim Radford. This is the second year Blacksburg High School has attempted this certification project, and Wharton and Goldsmith are to be commended for this outstanding achievement.
