Blacksburg opened its 2010 golf season Monday by claiming a seven-stroke victory over Galax in the annual Draper Valley Prep Classic played at the par-72, 5910-yard Draper Valley Golf Club in Draper.
The Bruins finished with a team score of 293, which was a tournament record, while Galax came home in second with a score of 300 and Graham was third with a 322. Radford was fourth with a 346, followed by Bath County (350), Carroll County (353), Grayson County (360), Tazewell (369), Chilhowie (371), PH-Glade Spring (387) and Fort Chiswell (404)
Blacksburg brothers Jake and Ryan Mundy, a senior and sophomore, respectively, finished tied for medalist honors with identical scores of 71, which tied the tournament record. A playoff was held and the younger Mundy, Ryan, came away with the top honors.
Junior Mike Yourshaw recorded a 74 and senior Jake Prater carded a 77.
"This was a great way to start off our season," said coach Rick Mattox Monday evening.
Blacksburg will play William Byrd on Wednesday at Blue Hills and will then play in the Metro on Thursday at Botetourt Country Club.
