The Blacksburg High School varsity boys soccer team has seen much success over the past three years. Much of this success has to do with Bruins’ senior Michael Mecham. The forward for the BHS soccer team has accomplished many things on the field over the course of his career including being named all region his junior year and all district every year since he was a freshman. Mecham has also been a part of two state titles for the Bruins.

Bruins coach Shelley Blumenthal is excited about the opportunity awarded to the Blacksburg senior. “If anyone deserves it, Michael does. With all of the hard work he has put in for himself and for this team over the course of his career, he has made it clear to everyone that he deserves his shot.”  Mecham signed his of intent on Wednesday, February 1.

The Blacksburg High School track and field team has also experienced large success in recent years due in large part to Senior Hannah Brown. Brown was ranked by Track and Field News as the #13 Girl in the nation last year in the 800 meter run.  Her best time in the 800 meter run is 2:09.0, earning her the school record.  She holds part of the BHS school record in the 4x800 relay and the school record in the 4x400 relay. Brown’s achievements on the track include: winning the indoor 500 meter run as both Freshman and Sophomore; the 1600 meter as a junior; and the 800 meter last year.

Brown made it official on Wednesday, February 1, by signing her national letter of intent with Stanford University. She chose the Cardinal over the University of Tennessee and William and Mary.

Both seniors took part in a signing ceremony on national signing day (Wed. February 1) in the Blacksburg High School library. Both Brown and Mecham are excited to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
