The Blacksburg girls' team ran away with the Group AA State Indoor Track and Field title Saturday at the Tolsma Indoor Track Complex on the campus of Liberty University. The Christiansburg boys’ and girls' team finished fourth, while the Blacksburg boys' came home with a ninth-place showing.
Blacksburg dominated on the girls’ side to claim the state title, despite not winning a single event. While Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans set a new state record in the shot put.
The Bruins took the top spot, outdistancing second place finisher E.C. Glass, 61-41 1/2. Tabb finished third with 33 points, while John Handley and Christiansburg finished tied for fourth with 32 points each.
Top finishers for Blacksburg included Lindsay Horton (third, pole vault, 10 feet), Kendal Wines (second, 500-meters, 1:17.20 and eighth, 300-meters, 43.10), Hannah Brown (third, 1,600-meters, 5:10.57 and seventh, 1,000-meters, 3:08.25), Bonnie Angermeier (third, 3,200 meters, 11:25.59 and fourth, 1,600-meters, 5:15.54), Kate Buss (fourth, 3,200-meters, 11:31.59 and fifth, 1,600-meters, 5:16.52), Lauren Jaeger (fifth, 3,200-meters, 11:29.90), while the 4x800-meter relay team (Sydney Summer, Lauren Jaeger, Kathryn Benson, Claire Ewing-Nelson), finished second with a time of 9:52.14 and the 4x400-meter relay team (Hannah Brown, Katie Olszewski, Caroline Honeycutt, Kendall Wines), was third with a time of 4:13.71.
Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans ended her stellar career by setting a new state record in the shot put with a distance of 43 feet.
The 4x800 relay team (Eliza Eaton, Cassie Linkous, Megan Burns, Rachel Bishop) ran to a first place finish in a time of 9:46.82, just edging Blacksburg (9:52.14).
Other top finishers for the Blue Demons included Rachel Rahmes (fourth, triple jump, 35-03.75), Cassie Linkous (fifth, 1,000-meters, 3:07.05.) and Allison Sherman (sixth, 3,200 meters, 11:31.59).
The Christiansburg boys finished fourth, while Blacksburg was ninth. E.C. Glass won the title with 68 points, followed by Lafayette (56), Heritage (39) Christiansburg (30) and York (30). The Bruins tallied 19 points.
Leading the Blue Demons were Nicholas Restrepo (second, 500-meters, 1:07.15), De'Quan Green-Gause (third, 500-meters, 1:07.34), the 4x200-meter relay team (Zack Snell, Tre Bacon, Cameron Johnson, De'Quan Green-Gause) was sixth with a time of 1:34.61, the 4x400-meter relay team (Nicholas Restrepo, B.K. Evans, Zach Chase, De'Quan Green-Gause) was third with a time of 3:30.62), the 4x800-meter relay team (Neal Eaton, Alex Cooper, Zach Chase, Matt Spurlock) came home eighth with a time of 8:25.43, and Zack Snell (seventh, triple jump, 43-05.75)
The Bruins were paced by Garland Smith (fourth, long jump, 20-09.25), Nick Link (seventh, 1,600-meters, 4:30.90 and eighth, 3,200-meters, 9:46.26), Tonda Carter (sixth, 55-meter hurdles, 8.02 and seventh, high jump, 6-00), Luke Phillip (eighth, 1,000-meters, 2:37.93), the 4x200-meter relay team (Aldan Ball, Ross Dove, Garland Smith, Ryan Sims) finished fifth with a time of 1:33.40), and the 4x800-meter relay team (Cody Earles, John Mattingly, Luke Phillips, Kenny Poole) was fourth with a time of 8:17.37.
