Josh Henderson and Clay Lacy both recorded double-doubles, in helping lead defending state champion Cave Spring, to a 71-59 victory over New Kent in the Group AA, Division 3 boys state semifinals Tuesday afternoon at VCU's Siegel's Center in Richmond.
Cave Spring (25-3) now plays Brunswick, a 67-58 winner over Northside, for the state title at 1 p.m.Saturday at the Siegel Center.
The Knights raced out to a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter and increased their advantage to 25-20 at the half. New Kent (25-3) stayed within striking distance throughout the third quarter, as they outscored Cave Spring, 27-25, to pull to within three, 50-47, heading into the pivotal fourth quarter. The Knights would start to take control in the final quarter, as they pulled away for the 71-59 victory.
For the game, Cave Spring shot 53 percent (24-53) compared to 33 percent (23/70) for New Kent. The Knights pulled down 51 rebounds, with 38 of them coming on the defensive end. New Kent grabbed 37 rebounds.
Justin Williams and Kaleb Lamb led New Kent with 16 points apiece.
Josh Henderson led Cave Spring with a game-high 31 points and 22 rebounds, while Clay Lacy contributed 22 points and tallied 11 rebounds. Mark Overstreet and Adam Hager each scored nine points.
