Two Christiansburg pitchers combined to hurl a one-hitter, as the Blue Demons scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 6-5 non-district baseball win over visiting Bassett Friday night.
Christiansburg’s Canaan Looney, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, came up to the plate in bottom of the seventh with bases loaded. With a full count, Looney smacked a ground-ball single just fair down the third base line to score Alex Dunn from third.
Alex Dunn was 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI, while Justin Bowler went 2-for4 with a double and a RBI for the Demons (1-1).
Trey Shumate pitched 5 2/3 inning of hitless innings, recording four strike outs and four walks. Aaron Jackson pitched 1 1/3 inning in relief, he gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one, and gave up no runs Jackson, who came in with score tied 5-5 in the fifth inning , earned the win for the Christiansburg.
Tyler Beam had the lone hit, a single, for Bassett.
