Dance, who is a a three-time Group AA state champion for Christiansburg, went 4-0 in the tournament, in which most of his opponents were college-age.

"This puts him as the #1 guy in the weight and qualifies him for the the FILA Jr World Team Trials in May. If he holds his rank and wins the trials, he would be the world team representative and would travel with Team USA to Thailand for the JR World Championships," said head coach Daryl Weber.

After receiving a first-round bye, Dance started his championship run with a 7-0, 4-0 decision over Dominic Olivieri (Illni Wrestling Club), followed by a 2-0,1-3,7-0 decision against Caleb Richardson (Finger Lakes Wrestling). In the semi's he claimed a 3-0, 4-3 decision over Nathan Tomasello (Burnett Trained Wres) and in the championship round, Dance took a 1-0, 1-0 decision over Conor Youtsey (Michigan Wrestling Club)

According to coach Weber, "FILA Jr. is for wrestlers born from '92-'94. This puts Joey in a pretty elite group. He has now won the National Freestyle Championship at the Cadet, Jr, FILA Cadet and FILA Jr level. I am not sure how many have ever done that but it cant be too many."
