Talented and lots of potential are two words you can use to describe this season's edition of the Christiansburg Blue Demons golf team, as they prepare for the upcoming season in a very competitive River Ridge District.
The Blue Demons, who finished fourth in the district tournament last year, will see seven returning linksters looking to provide the leadership this season. They include senior Jordan Alderman, playing at the No. 1 spot; junior Josh Moore at the No. 2 spot and junior Aaron Jackson at No. 3. Also returning is junior Ryan Woolwine, seniors Derek Lau and Justin Bowler, along with freshman Nick Carroll.
"With a large group of seniors graduating last year, we lost a lot of solid leadership," said head coach Steele Whisnant. "Jordan Alderman and Josh Moore each competed very well against the strong competition of the River Ridge District last season. Aaron Jackson also has experience in district matches."
New to the team this fall are seniors Hayden Wilburn, Sierra Queen and Cody Lester, along with freshmen Peyton Williams, Grayson Porterfield, Jesse Morris, Spencer Frazier, Neal Rahmes and Seth Brewer.
"This year's team is very talented and has lots of potential," added Whisnant.
When asked about the positive and negatives of this year's team, Whisnant said, "Our strength will be the tremendous leadership from our older, more experience golfers, while our biggest weakness is the overall experience in district match play."
The Blue Demons start district play this afternoon when they host the first of six district min-tournaments at The Meadows starting at 1 p.m.
