Christiansburg Grapplers Escape With Ninth Straight Title

chswrest2Senior Devin Carter won his third-straight individual title, as Christiansburg escaped the grasp of rival Grundy, who led going into the finals, to claim its ninth-straight Group AA state wrestling title Saturday night at Salem Civic Center.

Christiasnburg finished first with 175 points and Grundy was second with 166. Fauquier was third with 116 points, followed by New Kent (99 1/2) and Brookville (67) to round out the top five teams.

The Blue Demons, who trailed by 7 1/2 points (162-154 1/2) to Grundy going into the championship matches, saw Joey Dance (103), Carter (135), Zach Epperly (135) and Rich Eva (152) all win individual titles.

Eva's pin over Chancellor's Ryan Weinstock was the back-breaker, in which Grundy hopes of an upset were diminished, as Christiasnburg clinched No. 9.

Chistiansburg Brady Epperly (140) finished second, while James Linkous (145) finished third, Nick Criner (285) was fourth and Dane Peoples (103) was eighth.

Hidden Valley's David Williams finished first in the 160 pound class and Jake Semones of Salem won the title in the 215 pound weight class.

Defending state champion Neal Kennedy of Blacksburg lost by a 6-2 decision in the 119 pound final to Gage Swartz of James Wood.
