Hidden Valley scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they rallied to claim a 3-2 victory over Salem in the championship game of the River Ridge District baseball tournament Friday night at Calfee Park in Salem. It was the fourth-straight title for the Titans.
Hidden Valley will be at home for a 5 p.m. Tuesday regional game against Tazewell. Meanwhile, Salem hosts Bassett at Salem's Kiwanis Field at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
In the third-place game, Cave Spring beat Blacksburg, 20-9, to earn its way into the Region IV tournament. The Knights will play at Abingdon on Tuesday,
With Salem leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, Alex Liechty laced a double, Andy Richards then followed with an RBI-triple to tie the game. Chris Ferguson then hit a liner that allowed Richards to score with the winning run.
Both teams would score a run in the first inning. Salem would take a 2-1 lead when they scored a run in the top of the fifth.
The game was delayed in the top of the seventh when Salem shortstop Alex Stepp was injured when a foul tip came off his bat and hit him in the face. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. According to reports, Stepp dislodged three of his lower teeth and one upper tooth, as well as breaking his lower jaw.
