Burgis Leads Cougars Over 'Canes

DUBLIN - The Pulaski County Cougars picked up their first win of the season at home against Marion last night.  CJ Burgis led the Cougars in points and paced his team on the way to the win column.

Pulaski County (1-3) jumped out to a thirteen point lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead throughout the contest.

CJ Burgis, a 6-5 senior, led the charge for the Cougars, hauling down seven boards and dropping a team high 27 points including five of six behind the line and two three-pointers.

"Burgis is our all-district guy," said first year Pulaski County head coach Geoff McCulloch .  "We hope to get that out of him nightly, he's just a good player."

The Scarlet Hurricanes (1-1) made a run at the end of the third quarter to knock the Cougar lead down from 19 to 14.  It was then, at the start of the fourth, that Pulaski all but squashed the Hurricanes hopes for a comeback.  A CJ Burgis score was followed by an immediate steal off the inbound which resulted in another CJ Burgis score.  Yet, another steal off the inbound resulted in an assist from Burgis to teammate Ondre Powell to cap off a Cougar run of six points in less than thirty seconds.  Powell concluded the night with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars.

Gavin Roe led all scorers with 28 for Marion while teammates Matt Noe and Branson Bowman had 13 and 11 points respectively.

"This win means a lot to our team," said McCulloch.  "We had some difficult losses early on and the team felt like they got the monkey off their backs tonight.  We still have a lot to improve on."

Pulaski County will play host to two teams they have already lost to next week when George Wythe and Patrick Henry repay visits.
