Salem jumped out to an early lead and then had to hold off a fourth quarter rally, as they oulasted Lord Botetourt, 18-13, in non-district football action Friday night at Salem Memorial Stadium.
The Spartans (1-0) took a 12-0 lead at the half on a fumble recovery by Phillip Hughes and a 1-yard plunge by Marty Bishop.
A 29-yard scamper by Jordan Daniels in the third quarter would give Salem an 18-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers (0-2) would mount a rally in the fourth quarter. A 12-yard pass from Jay Phillips to Conner Bronson and a 34-yard run by Phillips would pull Lord Botetourt to within five, 18-13, as time ran out.
Salem, who had 161 yards rushing, was led by Daniels with 69 yards. Adam McGarrell was 8-of-9 for 148 yards.
Lord Botetourt, who had 51 yards on the ground, was led by Jay Phillips with 34 yards.
