One bad inning was the difference in this one, as Glenvar rallied to beat Fort Chiswell, 4-2, in the championship game of the Region C baseball tournament Friday night at Salem's Kiwanis Field.
Both teams will advance to the Group A state quarterfinals next week, with Glenvar (19-5) hosting the loser of the Region D championship game - either Gate City or Virginia High - and Fort Chiswell hitting the road to face the winner. The Gate City/Virginia High game was postponed from Friday night to 2 p.m. today.
The Pioneers would take a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Tye Kirby's RBI single.
A solo home run by Parker Mabe in fourth inning would give Fort Chiswell a 2-0 advantage.
The Highlanders would come to life in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lead-off batter Chase Strickland was hit by a pitch, a pair of Fort Chiswell error and a ground out allowed Glenvar to pull to within one, 2-1. Three hits, including RBI hits by Todd Dunbar and the other by Cory Bolden, along with a walk, allowed the Highlanders to take a 4-2 lead and the eventual win.
Tye Kirby was charged with the lost for Fort Chiswell. He gave up four runs, two earned, on six hits and strick out four batters.
Cory Bolden picked up the win in relief for Glenvar. He gave up no runs on no hits and struck out five in 2 1/3 innings. Anthony Ratliff, who started, returned to the mound in the top of the seventh and struck out the final two batters to earn the save.
