Donte Peoples Leads Galax Past Radford

radford-logoDonte Peoples tallied 280 of Galax’s 357 rushing yards, as the Maroon Tide outlasted host Radford 40-28 in non-district football action Friday night.

The Maroon Tide (3-1) took the opening kickoff and immediately started their march downfield. Led by the running of Donte and Steven Peoples, along with the passing of Chris Poole, Galax would cap off a seven-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown run by Donte Peoples to take a quick 7-0 lead with 8:29 on the clock. After holding the Bobcats (0-3) on their first possession, Galax wasted no time in striking again, as Poole connected with Steven Peoples on a 75-yard scoring strike on the second play from scrimmage to pull out to 14-0 advantage with 5:33 showing. Radford finally got things in motion, as they used the passing of Hunter Marshall, along with the running of D'Andre Cook, Isiah Carter, Marcus Finley and RJ Jordan to put together a 70-yard drive that was capped off with an 8-yard touchdown run by Cook on the option play and Caleb Findley's PAT to cut the Bobcats deficit in half, 14-7, with 2:00 remaining in the opening quarter.

Galax increased its lead to 21-7 on a 6-yard scramble by Donte Peoples with 9:59 to go in the second quarter. Radford answered with a scoring drive of its own when Marshall connected with Cook on a 17-yard pass and Findley’s PAT made it 21-14 at the 8:17 mark. The Maroon Tide started another drive that came to an end when Radford’s Eric Benitez recovered a loose ball at the Cats’ 44-yard line. Three plays later, the Bobcats coughed up the ball and Galax recovered at the Radford 44-yard line. Nine plays later, Donte Peoples scored from 4-yards out to give the Maroon Tide a 28-14 lead with 21 seconds left in the second quarter.

Galax garnered 298 yards of total offense, compared to 155 for Radford in the first half.

The Bobcats took the opening kickoff of the second half and immediately started their march. Led by the passing and running of Marshall, Carter and Alex Wright, the Cats would cap off the seven-pay, 65-yard drive when Jordan hauled in a 35-yard scoring strike and Findley’s PAT pulled Radford back to within seven, 28-21, with 8:53 in the third quarter. On its next possession, Galax fumbled the ball and Radford recovered at the Maroon Tide 47-yard line. Two plays later, Radford would fumble and Galax’s Donte Peoples picked up the loose ball and raced 46 yards for the score to give the Maroon Tide a 34-21 advantage at the 5:23 mark. On the ensuing kickoff, the Bobcats would pull to within six, 34-28, when Marshall connected with Finley on a 37-yard scoring strike with 2:23 left in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Galax extended its advantage to 40-28 on a 15-yard pass from Poole to Steven Peoples with 3:25 left in the game. Radford would fumble the ball on the ensuing kickoff and the Maroon Tide recovered the ball at the Cats 36-yard line. Galax then ran the clock out to pick up the 40-28 road win.

Galax finished with 476 yards of total offense, in which 357 of those yards came on the ground. Donte Peoples led the way with 280 yards on 40 carries.

Radford tallied 304 yards of offense, in which 182 came on the ground. Hunter Marshall led the way with 88 rushing yards. He also completed 7-of-8 passes for 122 yards.
