Wes Fletcher of Virginia High School captured his first-ever Group A Boys Tennis State Crown with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Radford’s Jeff Brooks Thursday afternoon at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.
"I been waiting four years for this," said Fletcher, whose main sport is golf. "I missed my chance in golf last year and I been working for this since that day. "He [Brooks] played good, but this was probably the best I ever played."
Fletcher, the Region D Champion, advanced to the finals with a three-set (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) decision over Dustan DeMello of Windsor.
Brooks dispatched George Mason’s Kan Tagami, 6-1, 6-0 in Thursday morning’s other semifinal match.
"This is a little disapointing," said Brooks about losing in the championship match. "We're going to try to win a team title tomorrow and I'm not going to dwell on this. I'm going to go and get my head on straight and come out playing tomorrow."
