When the Roanoke Catholic girl’s basketball team takes to the court this season, the Celtics, under first-year head coach Scott Smith, will be sporting a very young and inexperienced team that has no seniors.
Taking to the hardwood for the Lady Celtics are Megan Stokes (Jr, 5-5, G), Nat LeDonne (Soph, 5-4, G), Olivia Clark (8th, 5-5, G), Morgan McAllister (Fr, 5-4, G), Catherine Cullum (Fr, 5-2, G), Andee Secamiglio (8th, 5-3, G), Abby Secamiglio (8th, 5-2, F), Allison Poggendorf (Fr, 5-8, F), Caroline Poff (Fr, 5-6, F), Gabby McClelland (8th, 5-7, F), Rachel Whelan (Fr, 5-6, F) and Sadie Pilgreen (Fr, 5-4, F).
"This year's team is going to be young with little to no varsity experience," said Smith. "We have one junior and one sophomore and the rest are freshmen and 8th graders."
The coach sees his top players as being Clark, McClelland, Poff, McAllister and Cullum.
"The sky is the limit for this group of girls. This year we will hold our own in a very tough conference and with a little patience and luck the year could turn out to be great," added Smith. "We learned a lot about the game of basketball and about ourselves last year, which should lead to success on and off the court."
As for the team's strengths, Smith noted, "My girls love to play and learn the game of basketball, as for our weakness, it would be youth and inexperience.
"I have a wonderful group of girls on our team. The present and future looks bright for the Roanoke Catholic girl’s basketball team, if the coach doesn't mess it all up," stated Smith.
