With three returnees, the William Fleming swimming team is looking to improve in the upcoming season in the Western Valley District.
"Last year was a difficult year," said head coach Jennifer McMains. "We had a lot of athletes that were new to swimming."
This year's team included 10 boys and seven girls.
Newcomers to the program are Will Spencer, Nick Hines, Lucky Walker, Edward Starkey, William Strickland, Jessica Mundy, Jena Mundy, Khadeeyah Rowe and Chandler Shearing.
McMains sees the Colonels top swimmers Will Harris, Ndayisenga Deo, Hines, Jana Mundy, Jessica Mundy, Sharniqua Smith and Kim Thai.
"This year's team is starting off with more experienced swimmers who have good basic skill set," noted McMains.
The Colonels see their home meet on Jan. 14, 2012 against James River and Glenvar being the top meet of the season.
The coach sees the breast stroke as being the Colonels strength in the pool, while the butterfly is a weakness.
"I am excited at the level of enthusiasm that the swimmers have brought the team this year," added McMains. "I can't wait to see how they improved individually, as well as a team throughout the season."
